What is Egg Donation?

Egg donation is the process of donating one woman’s genetic material (egg/oocyte) to another person for the purpose of creating their child via in vitro fertilization (IVF). Any resulting embryo that is created by the insemination of this egg by sperm from the intended father or a sperm donor is then transferred into the uterus of the intended mother or a surrogate mother for a resulting pregnancy.

Surrogacy & Surrogate Mothers

A surrogate can be implanted with an embryo created in several different ways via IVF. One such way is using the intended father’s sperm and the intended mother’s eggs, while other options are using the intended father’s sperm and a donor egg, the intended mother’s eggs, sperm donor, or donor sperm donor eggs. Becoming an egg donor for a family wanting to create a child of their own is an exciting and rewarding journey for everyone involved. Our staff’s goal is to make your egg donation journey as enjoyable and fulfilling as possible, whether you are an intended parent or egg donor.

In fact, Conceptual Options’ egg donor program is very selective – on average, we accept only about 1-3% of applicants into our donor program. A tentative donor egg match is made when a recipient decides to move forward with a specific donor. Our client intake team will contact the egg donor to confirm her availability. If the egg donor is available for the intended parents’ desired time frame and passes an FDA-required round of testing, an official match is made. Some donors are selected and matched to a recipient very quickly after applying; others may take months or years before they are selected; still, others may never be selected.

For Egg Donors:

The egg retrieval process is a generally painless procedure, which takes about 20-30 minutes with about an hour of recovery at the clinic. You will have intravenous sedation for comfort. The procedure to retrieve the eggs is called an oocyte (egg) aspiration, performed with an ultrasound-guided needle passing from the upper vagina into each ovary. After a brief recovery from the anesthesia, you will be able to go home and return to your normal daily routine.

Plane travel
For Parents:

Yes, there will be some costs to think about when choosing an egg donor that is not located near your clinic. There will be travel expenses for the egg donor and a companion (if she chooses to have one), including travel, lodging, car rental, and per diem (if applicable). In general, there will be two separate trips that the egg donor will have to take. The first will be for her medical testing with your clinic of choice (some clinics will allow this to be done locally where the Donor lives, but each fertility clinic has its own preferences). The second time the donor will have to travel will be for the retrieval.
