Recommended UK Surrogacy Regulator in Doubt

The Law Commission in the UK has recommended that the UK government utilize HFEA, the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority, to regulate the practice of surrogacy.  Although HFEA is responsible for managing the donation of gametes and embryos, the organization itself doubts that they can handle that additional workload without additional resources.

HFEA director of strategy and corporate affairs, Clare Ettinghausen, has stated that regulating clinics and the donation of gametes and embryos is a totally different entity that will require different planning, different training, and different staff.  In addition, the potential reforms to the law will include Intended Parents becoming legal parents from birth and permitting advertisements for surrogates.
