A Massachusetts’ Parental Equality Law Signed by Governor Healey

Massachusetts Passes Parental Equality Law

Massachusetts has passed a law (H.4970) that will effectively ensure Parental Equality for all families. The groundbreaking law is meant to have all children born in the State to have the same rights and legal protections to their parentage without regard to the marital status, gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation of their parents or the circumstances of the child’s birth, including whether the child was born as a result of assisted reproduction or surrogacy.

In fact, the law requires the labels “father” and “mother” to be removed under the law.  Inclusive terms like “parent” or “person who gave birth “will be used instead in order to protect the legal parental rights of all families, including diverse and LGBTQ families.
