China’s One Child Policy is Backfiring for Single Women

Despite a decline in the Chinese birth rate, a five-year legal battle regrading a single woman freezing her eggs has finally concluded. China has been long known to be a traditionalist country that believes that single women giving birth is taboo.  In this case, Teresa XU was denied her ability to freeze her eggs for future use due to the fact that she is not married.

While the Court determined that it was merely using existing law in making its decision, the Court did leave an opening for regulation changes to allow single women the same access to egg freezing as married women.  And it is important to note that even though China changed its one child policy in 2016, birth rates have continued to drop.
