On February 18th, President Trump signed an Executive Order aimed at expanding access to IVF in the US. Specifically, the order is meant to lower costs, expand access, and protecting IVF services in those states where the state laws are overly restrictive, such as Alabama where frozen embryos are considered “extrauterine children.”
Many are applauding this Order, such as Barbara Collura, president and CEO of RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association, calling it promising while addressing the financial barriers and legal uncertainties surrounding fertility treatments. On the other hand, many conservative Republican lawmakers feel that it goes too far. We will know more once policy recommendations from several federal agencies is submitted on cost reduction strategies, expanded insurance coverage, and legal protections for IVF patients.
